A WEEK AT YAVNEH
Minyan
Yavneh is a lively community with minyan three times a day. Shacharit starts on weekdays and weekends (starting a little later on Sundays) is always followed by a perfectly cereal-curated breakfast. Mincha and Maariv times fluctuate with shkiah, but are followed by student-led beit midrash learning night on Tuesdays and by Mishmar on Thursdays. After Shacharit on Sundays, we have Sunday Morning Shiur (SMS) given by Rav Yehudah.
Shabbat
Shabbat in Yavneh is the highlight of the week. Shabbat begins with Kabbalat Shabbat and Maariv, which is followed by dinner at Hillel or Chabad. Shacharit the next morning is followed by kiddush and parsha discussion. Lunch comes next, stretching into the early afternoon with zmirot and chill time in Hillel. Often a walk to the Point at Lake Michigan, napping (on our extremely comfortable "white couch") and competitive games of trivia and anagrams are part of the afternoon itinerary. Shabbat ends with Mincha, a bagel and lox Seudah Shelishit, and finally Maariv and Havdalah.
Our Standards of Orthodoxy
Yavneh serves as the Orthodox congregation of Hyde Park. As such, we seek to follow standards of halakhic observance as laid out in the Shulchan Aruch and its interpretations. During the University of Chicago academic year, Yavneh provides daily prayer services, including Shacharit and Mincha/Maariv, as well as full Shabbat programming with services Friday night and Shabbat day. In this capacity, we are recognized by the Chicago Rabbinical Council (cRc) as an Orthodox synagogue in Chicago. Yavneh also provides services for those Jewish holidays and festivals overlapping the University of Chicago academic year. Should any halachic disputes requiring appeals to an outside Beit Din arise, they will be resolved only through the Av Beit Din of the cRc.

Voting members pay dues of $18 each academic quarter, or $54 a year. Dues go towards weekly kiddush, lunch, seudah shelishit, and other Yavneh expenses. Yavneh is committed to fostering our inclusive environment, and our events are open to everyone students and non-students alike.
