YAVNEH OF HYDE PARK

What we do

Mostly problem sets (just kidding). We daven, enjoy communal weekday breakfasts and Shabbat meals, learn Torah, and spend too much time debating obscure facets of knowledge in Hillel's great room.

Shacharit. mincha. maariv. torah. chesSed.

Yavneh is a lively community with minyan three times a day. Shacharit starts at 7:45am on weekdays and at 9:00am on Sundays, and is followed by breakfast. Mincha and Maariv times fluctuate with shkiah, but are followed by student-led Cholent and Chizuk on Tuesdays and by Mishmar on Thursdays. After Shacharit on Sundays, we have Sunday Morning Shiur given by Rav Yehudah. Yavneh also runs chessed opportunities throughout the quarter.

Davening. Dinner. Kiddush. Lunch. SeudaH Shelishit. Havdalah.

Shabbat in Yavneh is the highlight of the week and is packed with food, zemirot, and friends. Shabbat begins with Kabbalat Shabbat and Maariv, which is followed by a communal dinner. Shacharit the next morning begins at 9:15am, and is followed by kiddush and parsha discussion. Lunch comes next and stretches into the early afternoon. Students spend the afternoon hanging out, either in Hillel or at the Point by Lake Michigan, or napping. Shabbat ends with Mincha, Seudah Shelishit, and Maariv.

Membership

Yavneh events are open to everyone, students and non-students alike. Voting members pay small dues of $18 each academic quarter or $54 a year. Dues go towards weekly kiddush and other Yavneh expenses.

For questions regarding membership or to pay dues, please contact the treasurer or pay using Venmo (@Yavneh-Treasurer).

OUR STANDARDS OF OBSERVANCE

Yavneh serves as the Orthodox congregation of Hyde Park. As such, we seek to follow standards of halakhic observance as laid out in the Shulchan Aruch and its interpretations. During the University of Chicago academic year, Yavneh provides daily prayer services, including Shacharit and Mincha/Maariv, as well as full Shabbat programming with services Friday night and Shabbat day. In this capacity, we are recognized by the Chicago Rabbinical Council (cRc) as an Orthodox synagogue in Chicago. Yavneh also provides services for those Jewish holidays and festivals overlapping the University of Chicago academic year. Should any halachic disputes requiring appeals to an outside Beit Din arise, they will be resolved only through the Av Beit Din of the cRc.
